How Clean is Your Office?

Even if it looks clean, your office can still be home to lots of nasty germs, bacteria and viruses just waiting to make your staff sick. Our Managing Director James Lattimer delves deeper into office hygiene, the worst places for bacteria to hide and why it matters to your business.

The dirtiest places in the office

The following places have been identified as the worst offending areas for dirt and bacteria around the office. It’s worth noting each was found to harbour more bacteria than toilet seats!

Your office desk

Did you know office desks have been found to be 400 times dirtier than a toilet seat? Since we eat, drink, work, move documents around and chat here, it’s not really that surprising.

Telephones

One of the most used items in the office but one that’s often overlooked for cleaning is the telephone. With multiple people picking it up, speaking into the receiver and putting it directly on their face, the average office telephone has around 25,000 bacteria on its surface.

Keyboards

When was the last time you cleaned your keyboard? Pick it up, turn it upside down and give it a gentle shake and you may be very surprised to see how much dirt comes out of it. And that’s just the stuff you can see - keyboards can harbour around 3,500 bacteria.

How does a dirty office affect your business?

Now more than ever, asking yourself ‘how clean is my office’ is one of the most important questions you can regularly consider. The sudden spread of coronavirus has highlighted just how vital having a regular and thorough cleaning routine is for the wellbeing of your staff – and by extension, the success of your business.

But it’s not just coronavirus that a clean office helps to tackle. Each year, staff sickness and absences cost the UK economy around £12 billion in lost revenue. While not all absences will be directly related to the cleanliness of your office, a dirty working environment won’t help. A dirty office can also affect the mental wellbeing of employees as well as their physical health.
